The End of Terrorism

But evil men and impostors will wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

2 Timothy 3:13 ESV

Terror is the defining evil of our time. With the dawn of every new day comes the news of another attack. Terrorism is a huge concern on everyone’s mind, but how shall we understand this insanity? What drives these beasts of carnage to wage their unholy war? I would suggest an inconvenient truth. But first, let’s examine how the world reacts toward terrorism.

Each terror attack is met with the same running narrative. First, each and every angle of the horrific event is analyzed until we know every detail. At this point, one of the many satanic groups claims responsibility. What happens next always intrigues me. The question is posed, “how do we can stop terror from happening again?” They seek to reconstruct a world where we feel safe again. But is that even possible? The biblical answer is no. We cannot stop evil.

The terrorism we are witnessing in our world, is a result, not of the way people think, but of something deep within the human heart. It is the presence of sin. The root issue of terrorism, and hate groups, is not in their ideology, it is the fact of indwelling sin. Men commit these atrocities because of the presence and power of an evil that began long ago, as a result of man’s rebellion against his Creator. The very concept of the depravity of man, is rejected by this present world order. The single most underestimated fact in our world is sin. In the words of Oswald Chambers, “We simply do not calculate sin.”

The fact of sin runs contrary to the commentators of the twenty-four-hour news cycle. They scratch their heads and wring their hands, all the while standing on a set of railroad tracks facing a fast approaching train. They attempt to cure an incurable cancer with a Band-Aid and an aspirin. They try to fix the unfixable with solutions that reveal an obvious ignorance of the real problem.

The Bible promises that in the last days men will become ungodly, slanderous, brutal and treacherous. We are living in the last days which the Bible promises will be dangerous. (2 Timothy 3:1-5) At this point, the Christian becomes the most negative and the most positive of folk, all at the same time. We confidently declare, in the same breath, that there is no hope and yet there is great hope! This world cannot fix itself. Only the return of Jesus Christ will end terrorism. We confidently look above the fray and see a new day dawning out of the charred rubble left by the chaos produced by sin. We hear the pregnant woman crying out and we see the birth of a new world order. Christ’s rule and reign is only a push away. The wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. Terror will end, but only when He returns as King.
